What to Expect from the Royal Footprints Private Wine Tour From Belgrade

By late morning, you are standing among vineyards just outside Belgrade, tasting a white Morava that almost no one outside Serbia knows exists. An hour later, you are walking through a quiet royal cellar built for a dynasty that once shaped the country — and beginning to understand why wine mattered here beyond taste. As the day moves on, the settings become more personal, the conversations less formal. Somewhere between the last tasting and lunch at a family table, the region starts to connect into a single story.

If you look for a tour closer to Novi Sad in Fruška Gora region, you can check our Fruska Gora Wine Tour.

Highlights

  • Four distinct winery perspectives:
Each stop shows a different approach — from indigenous varieties and modern production to royal heritage and small-scale family winemaking.
  • Indigenous varieties you are unlikely to encounter elsewhere:
Tasting Morava and Prokupac is not positioned as novelty, but as context. These wines help explain what makes Serbian viticulture distinct, beyond international styles.
  • Royal history that directly shaped the wine tradition:
The visit to the King’s Winery is not just historical background. It clarifies how vineyard development in this region was influenced by political ambition and long-term planning.
  • Lunch as part of the wine experience, not a break:
The final stop connects food, wine, and conversation directly with the winemaker (and certified sommelier), turning the meal into a continuation of the day’s story.

Tour Flow

After pickup from your accommodation in Belgrade (typically around 10am), you leave the city and enter the Šumadija region, where vineyards gradually replace urban landscape.

Despotika Winery

The first stop is in the village of Vlaški Do at Despotika Winery, a younger but ambitious producer focused on indigenous Serbian grape varieties. Here, you are introduced to wines such as Morava and Prokupac, with time to understand how these varieties are being reinterpreted in modern Serbian winemaking.

King’s Winery

From there, the route continues toward Topola, the center of the Šumadija wine region. On the slopes of Oplenac hill, you visit the King’s Winery, historically linked to the Karađorđević royal family. The preserved royal cellar offers a clear view into how wine was produced here in the early 20th century, along with access to the archive where bottles dating back to the 1930s are still kept.

Aleksandrović Winery

The day then moves forward to Aleksandrović Winery, one of the key producers in Serbia since the 1990s. The visit combines a modern production setting with strong continuity of tradition, particularly through their well-known Trijumf wines. While tasting, you learn how this label connects back to the royal wine story introduced earlier in the day.

Food and Wine Experience at Trilogija Winery

The final stop takes place in a smaller, family-run winery in a rural setting. Here, the experience shifts from structured tastings to a more personal setting, where lunch is served alongside the winemaker’s own wines. As both host and certified sommelier, the winemaker presents his wines through food, conversation, and everyday practice, offering a different perspective on the same region.

After lunch, the return journey to Belgrade follows, with arrival in the late afternoon.

Miljan took 4 of us on a day tour of 4 wineries. Milan’s is a great guide with a great knowledge of wine and everything else Serbia. We definitely recommend him. The wineries are all very different and each added something to the trip. the first winery was relatively new and modern with a lovely terrace overlooking the vineyard to sample the wines. Beware the generous portions! The Morava grape, producing a white wine, was one we had not tried before and is well worth trying. We then headed to the next winery and lunch spot. This was much smaller than the first, with far lower volumes. The lunch here was amazing and never ending. We loved the Black Tamjanika wine, probably our favourite of the entire day. Next stop was the Kings Cellar. The history and cellars here are fascinating but the wines somewhat average. Final stop of the day was the Alexandrovic winery. Another very modern winery set up well for tourism. The sommelier here was great and gave a really good background to the grapes grown, the history etc. The wines here were all excellent. We absolutely loved this trip. There is a little driving involved to get to see all 4 (good to break between the wines to be honest!) but well worth it. We understood that some tours only visit the last 2 wineries. I think if you did this you would miss out so much.

My boyfriend and I went for a one-day wine tasting trip with our guide Andrija in late-november, and we had such a great day! Our private guide could tell a lot of interesting facts about Serbia and the wineries, and was showing us great hospitality. The wines were tasteful, we had a delicious lunch, the carride felt safe, and we enjoyed the Serbian landscapes. Finally, Andrija did a really great job guiding us! Highly recommended from our side! Best, Javier and Anna

For a long time, wife and I wanted to take a wine tour together and this years' birthday was perfect occasion for a surprise wine tour party for my wife. Miljan from Serbian Private Tours managed to organise a tour for 10 of us on a tight schedule. And what a tour it was! We were picked up in front of our apartment by a fancy new minibus, and taken for an educational, inspiring and above all a fun ride for everyone. Tour was themed "in kings' footsteps" and thought us about history of winemaking in central Serbia, showed us different types and flavours of winemaking - from big a successful private winery, small family owned winery all the way to King Aleksandars' winery. Each stop offered completely different experience, with different ambient, history and obviously wines, yet all was connected by the same thread of passion for winemaking and indigenous vines. Cherry on top was the last stop at wine fair in Topola. Miljan was a great host and professional, has offered a lot of interesting information and stories, but has managed to adapt to our unusual group (each stop being a surprise, and generally a small celebration) and felt like a true part of the group. The minivan was also great and Stanko the driver always managed to find the right tune for us to listen to or sing along with and was a cool sidekick the whole ride. As a special curiosity, even though we haven't agreed to this upfront, Miljan was carrying a professional camera with him, and has taken a lot of great pictures of the event - he even went out of his way to create a neat little postcard that we'll print and send to everyone in the group as a souvenir. A great surprise and a great touch! All in all, this is definitely going to be a party and a tour to remember, would definitely recommend.

We had a great time on our wine tour with beautiful wineries and beautiful wine. The tour is exactly as described and because we were traveling during this pandemic, we pretty much had most of these wineries to ourselves. The first stop was Despotika and a perfect start our day. The winery overlooks beautiful vineyards and scenery and we got 4 different types of wines. From here we went to a family house and had a wonderful lunch and also 4 glasses of wine to go with our meal. This is a true Serbian experience as you are in someone's actual house. From there we then went to a museum-like winery that gave us a sampling of wine. This use to be the King's old cellar and still has archives of old wine. A good stop and interesting to learn about. Our last stop was Aleksandrovic Winery which feels like a high-end winery that also overlooks beautiful vineyards. Here we sat until about sunset with delicious wine! We had a great time, and our guide Andrija was great. Also got some photos of our trip which was a nice surprise!! Overall highly recommend.
