What to Expect From the Fruska Gora and Sremski Karlovci Tour in 2023/24

Experience the essence of Serbian heritage and natural wonders on our Fruska Gora Monasteries and Sremski Karlovci tour. Explore medieval monasteries nestled in the Fruska Gora slopes and discover the region’s renowned winemaking tradition. Wander through the charming streets of Sremski Karlovci, where history comes alive. At the end, you’ll stop for lunch in a family owned wine cellar in a local village. But this won’t be just lunch, it’ll be an example of true local hospitality.

This tour’s itinerary can be adapted in order to exclude one monastery and to add Novi Sad and Petrovaradin Fortress to the itinerary instead. If you are located in Novi Sad, you can also take this tour from there.

Highlights

  • Visit important Serbian monasteries and meet charming Sremski Karlovci town while getting historical context from your private guide.
  • Enjoy the fantastic view over Danube from Petrovaradin Fortress and learn some interesting facts about its long construction.
  • Marvel at Novi Sad baroque architecture and discover its cultural importance for Serbian people.
  • Enjoy a unique gastronomy and wine experience at a local household.

Tour Flow

#YourSerbiaHost will pick you up from your hotel or other address in Belgrade (or Novi Sad) in the morning hours (usual pickup time 10am). After less than hour’s drive you’ll reach your first stop, monastery Krusedol. The XVI century monastery is considered to be the most beautiful and most important monastery of Fruska Gora. Here you’ll get the historic context of the area, but you’ll also have an opportunity to see “a wall which is older than the US”, as referred to by one of the monks.

From Krusedol you’ll continue to the Monastery Grgeteg. This monastery with complicated name, even for native speakers, is a place which is not on mass tourism trail. Here you’ll be able to feel what the monastic life really looks like. The highlight of this monastery is the icon of Holy Mother Three-handed. More about the icon’s name and its miracles you’ll learn on the spot.

After spiritual experience in these two monasteries you’ll reach Sremski Karlovci. Here you’ll wander its streets and squares. You’ll hear the stories about Karlovac Treaty and the first time when a round table was used in world diplomacy. In the town’s center you’ll see: Four Lions Fountain, Patriarch’s Residence, St. Nicola’s Orthodox Cathedral, Grammar School. If wine tasting is your thing, we’ll take you to a winery close to the main square for a quick sip.

The gastronomy and hospitality experience will be in a family owned wine cellar in a local village. Home cooked lunch with matching wines will taste even better than it sounds. Another must when in Fruska Gora is Bermet, a dessert wine with world fame which is served at the end of the meal. All this with the personal attention of a cook and a winemaker.

Note

During winter period, the wine cellar is closed and an alternative for lunch is a restaurant on the Danube bank, close to Novi Sad.

After wine tasting and lunch it’ll be time to return to Belgrade (or Novi Sad). Usual drop-off time is between 5 and 6pm.

My family visited Serbia for the first time and I was looking for private guided tours with transfers and rich program. It was a great choice, my family is extremely satisfied with the content of the tour and the way it was presented. I will definitely choose Serbian Private Tours again. Thank you! This was the first of 3 tours that we took recently with Andrija Vatović and Serbian Private Tours. My first impulse is to say that this was the very BEST day - but that isn't quite fair to the other tours - which were each equally wonderful in their own ways. This trip was our first real introduction to Serbia's monasteries, and the place they hold within Serbian culture - so it was eye-opening in many ways. The churches themselves are absolutely peaceful and so beautiful, and the tradition of fresco painting is an absolute treasure - there is so much beauty that it's impossible to take it all in. Our visit to Petrovaradin Fortress was also a great opportunity to begin to understand more of the political history of the area. However, the treat that put this day over the top was our lunch-time visit with Dragan at Podrum Miljević. Dragan has a small winery and pairs his wines with an amazing traditional lunch. I don't believe I will ever enjoy a lunch more than that day - and SO delicious! (Who knew I would come home googling recipes for nettle soup?!?) His wines are carefully crafted and absolutely delicious. I wish I had had more room in my suitcase to bring home more! I could envision a repeat trip JUST for this wonderful experience. Thank you, Dragan! "Andrew" is an incredibly knowledgeable guide and was able to share so much about the construction of the monasteries, the fortress and all of their places in Serbian history. He is an excellent teacher, explaining the connections and contradictions that have derived from centuries of challenge and conflict. We were incredibly lucky to have 3 days of tours with him on our recent visit to Belgrade, and still feel that we only scratched the surface of what he knows about the country and region's history. Hope to have the chance to reacquaint in the future for more conversations! Date of experience: April 2022

To begin, I found Serbian Private Tours (SPT) website informative and helpful. My email communications with Miljan from SPT was prompt, clear and helpful. I requested a slight modification to the tour itinerary to include stops at Petrovaradin and Novi Sad. There was no problem with personalizing the tour and no change in price. Booking and paying for the tour online was easy and quick. This was a refreshing change from many tourist activities in this part of the world. The tour itself was fascinating. Miljan has an incredible knowledge of the very complicated history of Serbia. He is interesting, personable, and easy to spend an entire day with. His English is perfect. The highlight of the day was the late lunch organized by SPT at a winery were we were treated to Rakija, 3 kinds of wine, and traditional Serbian food, ALL homemade by Dragan, the wonderful host.
